About Sue Walters

Sue Walters, 58, was the first person in NSW to receive a cochlear implant (CI) after losing all her hearing from meningococcal meningitis at the age of 22. Sue became a passionate advocate for the implant due to this experience and is co-founder of the CI volunteer support group CICADA AUSTRALIA Inc. established in 1985. CICADA Committee run regular Morning Teas, BBQ and information days for implant recipients and others interested in the CI. Sue was awarded an OAM in the 2019 Australia Day honours for her services to the hearing impaired Sue works in clinical support at the RIDBC Sydney Cochlear Implant Program, troubleshooting equipment, keeping clients ‘on the air’, advising and educating people about the CI. Sue also participates in research and testing of new CI devices. Sue has three children and lives in the Georges River area in Sydney with her husband. She enjoys cooking, yoga, bushwalking, camping and travelling in the countryside. Sue participated in the 2015 Coo-ee re-enactment march from from Gilgandra to Sydney.
