When I read Quora, one question always comes up.

“If you could live your life over, what words of wisdom would you impart?”

If you’ve lived long enough, I’m sure you have things that have resonated with you. Here are a few that have worked for me.

Learn how to kiss up to your boss

Employers are in charge of whether you stay or lose your job. Sometimes they don’t know how hard you are working so you have to let them know.

Don’t run on cement

It’s one of the worst things you can do to your knees. Run on dirt, or grass, or cross-train using different muscle groups. Your body will thank you for it later.

Having sex with someone doesn’t mean they love you

When I was young, I slept with so many, hoping that they had real feelings for me. I wasted much time and effort on people who just wanted a roll in the hay.

Don’t waste your money on expensive coffee drinks

The five dollars you save each day can go toward buying something useful or help you start investing for the future.

To be interesting to other people you have to be interested in other people

Take an interest in others. Ask them questions about themselves. Don’t turn the conversation around so you can jabber on about yourself.

When you’re feeling depressed about your health, find somebody who is in worse shape than you are

You will realize that your problems are insignificant compared to those having a tougher time.

Smile

It will make you look better and feel younger. It’s easy to do and costs nothing.

Baking soda is a cheap way to whiten your teeth

I can’t handle those white strips. I suspect they’re bad for you. But baking soda? My hygienist says it’s a little-known secret and is much cheaper than those bleaching methods.

If you wanna lose weight, stay away from white and beige foods

Most of them are bad for you. Try to focus on colorful foods that are close to their natural state. Jellybeans don’t count.

Get up and move around

Even if your mobility is impaired, try to get up and go to the other room and do something else for a while. Give yourself a change of scenery, and a little bit of exercise.

Use humor to get out of bad situations

If somebody is mistreating you, try to turn it into a joke. It will completely disarm them and get you out of the uncomfortable situation.

Remember that inheritance is a gift and not something that is owed

Lots of people hope they’re going to get a windfall. If you do, good for you, but don;t expect it. Greed is toxic.

Trying to be patient with younger people

Remember, you were young once, staying out too late, driving too fast, and getting drunk now and then.

Remember the child in you

I love kids from 4 to 10 when they are spontaneous and creative. Try to carry that attitude into your adult life. It’s fun!

Try to be grateful every day

Sometimes it might not be easy, but if you look at what you have versus what you don’t have, you’ll be surprised how well things are going for you.

Try to eat slower

The food on your plate isn’t going anywhere unless you’re surrounded by pigeons and seagulls. It aids your digestion, and you might even enjoy your food more.

Be nice to those serving you at a restaurant

It’s hard to work in the food industry. Those people are often mistreated by customers. Showing your appreciation goes a long way in making your server feel good.

Give compliments freely

It doesn’t hurt to give a compliment. You don’t have to write a check or do anything physical. You’ll be surprised how good both of you will feel afterward.

Everyone is good at something

It might be something different than your skill, but everybody can excel in one way or another. Your opinion isn’t always appreciated Maybe you should wait until somebody asks your opinion before you freely dole it out.

Don’t waste your time trying to convince someone of another point of view

Unless you’re a lawyer, avoid this. You could get them angry and you could lose a friendship.

Don’t use your cell phone at a dining establishment

Why are you wasting money on a nice meal while looking at your phone?

Talk to old people

They were once young and vibrant like you and they have a lot of wisdom to share.

Don’t take things so personally

Most people aren’t even thinking about you as much as you think they are.

When you get a new boss, it’s time to start interviewing for a new job

A new boss will often replace you with their people. Dust off your resume and see what’s out there.

Stay away from too much caffeine, diet drinks, and sweeteners

The calcium will be leaked from your bones and you will pay for it later.

A big glass of water will do wonders to curb your appetite

Often you aren’t hungry, but thirsty. A large glass of water will make you feel fuller and you will eat less.

Volunteer

Sometimes the reward you get from helping others far outweighs any monetary remuneration you may receive from doing the same task.
