When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose to step away from their royal duties to forge their own path they not only alienated the Royal Family but also the broader public.

The repercussions of their actions still persist today, making their decision a cautionary tale for other members of the royal institution.

Despite this, one voice has risen encouraging the beloved Prince William and Princess Catherine to follow a similar path.

During a recent appearance on GB News, leader of the anti-monarchy group Republic, Graham Smith was asked whether William and Catherine should “follow a similar path to Harry and Meghan”.

“Yes, but I think they all would,” Graham replied.

“At the moment we pay through the Duchy of Cornwall, which is not private property despite their claim, we pay William a personal income of about £25million a year, which is six times the combined incomes of all the elected heads of state of Europe at least.

“For that, he does very little. If you look at his calendar, his schedule of engagements, which are typically an hour long, if that, it really doesn’t add up too much.”

After voicing his opposition to the funds allocated to members of the Royal Family, Graham suggested that William and Catherine would be “better off” if they “did their own thing” much like Harry and Meghan.

“The point is, we don’t get an awful lot in return for £25million or £24million, which is an obscene amount of money to throw at one person,” he explained.

“So we would all be better off, including William and Kate, if they went off and did their own thing, whether they choose to live in the States or stay here is entirely up to them.”

While the idea seems unlikely, given William and Catherine’s admirable dedication to royal duty, should the pair decide to follow Harry and Meghan’s lead, they would likely be met with heartbreak from an adoring public, echoing the backlash experienced by Harry and Meghan.

Harry and Meghan’s departure from the Royal Family in 2020, commonly referred to as “Megxit”, signaled a major shift in the traditional dynamics of the Monarchy. The move was driven by the pair’s desire for a more independent and private life, distancing themselves from the intense media scrutiny that had been a constant presence in their lives.

The decision was accompanied by revelations in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, where the couple candidly discussed their struggles within the royal institution. The interview shed light on the challenges they faced and strained relationships within the family, sparking widespread public discussion.

Since stepping back, Prince Harry’s ties with the Royal Family have remained strained. While the odd public appearance here and there has hinted at attempts at reconciliation, the distance remains palpable.
