For some time rumours have swirled that Prince Harry is yearning for a return home to the UK, but any chance of him setting foot on British soil depends on one key condition from Meghan Markle.

Since stepping away from his royal duties in 2020 with Meghan, Harry has remained estranged from his family across the pond.

Adding to the tensions were revelations made in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, where Harry and Meghan candidly discussed their struggles within the royal institution. This was followed by the release of Harry’s candid memoir and a series of interviews in which he continued to criticise The Firm.

While reports suggest that Harry is having second thoughts about his move to the US, any possibility of returning to the royal fold rests with Meghan, according to royal author and expert Tom Quinn.

“Meghan has said she’s only prepared to return to England if she and Harry have a place of their own and the security they both feel is essential. Meghan will never return to the UK and stay with her husband‘s relatives,” Quinn told The Mirror.

“If the couple manage to find a permanent home and sort out the security issue they will certainly want to bring their children to the UK but it’s going to take a lot of diplomacy to get to the point where Archie and Lili are able to develop a genuine and warm relationship with their cousins George, Charlotte and Louis.”

While Meghan seems to be standing in the way of Harry returning home, the couple may have no choice but to head back to the UK after reports suggested they could be facing possible deportation from the US in the near future.

With the approaching US election, the couple is said to be “worried sick” after Donald Trump suggested that if he is re-elected he may consider deporting the pair.

“The Sussexes are worried sick over the prospect of Donald Trump becoming president again – and making good on his vow to kick Prince Harry out of America,” a source told New Idea.

“They’re putting together a contingency plan that would see them flee the country with their children [Archie and Lilibet] if Trump does return to office.”

Amid inquiries into Harry’s visa application, spurred by revelations in his revealing memoir Spare regarding drug use, Trump declared his readiness to take “appropriate action” should it be revealed that Harry misled authorities on his visa application.
