He has been described as one of the greatest actors of his generation and has three best-actor Oscars to back up the hype. Yet Daniel Day-Lewis has never chased fame and spent many years in semi-retirement between roles.
When Day-Lewis announced his official retirement, fans and critics were devastated but now the esteemed actor will return to the big screen for his son’s, Ronan Day-Lewis, debut feature.
Anemone is the feature film debut for 26-year-old Ronan, who is better known as a painter and filmmaker in the United States.
Co-written by father and son, the film will explore the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, and the dynamics of familial bonds, according to producer and Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski.
“We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” Kujawski said.
“They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B.”
The elder Day-Lewis will be joined by an esteemed supporting cast including Game of Thrones Alumnus Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green.
The 67-year-old was last seen in 2017’s Phantom Thread, a role which garnered rave reviews and an Oscar nod.
While fans and critics will be excited by the news, the actor gave no indication that he will return to work or retreat from the spotlight again.
Day-Lewis is well known for his unconventional approach to career planning and even took five years off to work as a shoe cobbler in Italy.
Born in London to poet Cecil Day- Lewis and actor Jill Balcon, Day-Lewis grew up in an artistic household and excelled on the stage while attending the National Youth Theater as a teenager.
Despite his background on the stage, he is considered a method actor and known for his intense research and devotion to his roles. While training at the Bristol Old Vic School, he made his film debut in Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971 but his standout role was in My Beautiful Launderette.
He won his first Oscar for best actor in My Left Foot and followed up with Best Actor Oscar wins for There Will Be Blood and Lincoln.
He has also been knighted for his services to acting.
