Renowned Hollywood icon Joan Collins has taken a bold stand against woke culture, not mincing words when describing it as “out of control”.
During a recent interview with GB News, Collins held little back as she expressed her concerns about the impact of cancel culture, taking particular issue with the impact it has had on the world of comedy and how easily people are offended nowadays.
“I think it’s gone out of control, really. You can’t say anything. People get offended. We’ve lost our British sense of humour.” she began.
“I grew up with my father going to – because he was an agent for variety halls – and so we would go and we would see outrageous comedians making jokes about their mother-in-law and fat people.
“You can’t say that now. You can’t say any of that stuff now.”
Collins also expressed her preference for the term “actress” over “actor” when referring to female performers, stating that she finds “actor” to be demeaning.
“I don’t call myself an actor. If I’m in a room with some actors and actresses, I call us actors, and I do sometimes call myself a jobbing actor, but on the whole, I like to be called an actress,” she explained.
“It’s a very pretty word and it’s feminine, and I consider myself to be feminine and a feminist. And why should we be called female actors? I find it demeaning, frankly.”
It’s not the first time Collins has raised her voice against cancel culture, after criticising its stifling nature in the past.
The 91-year-old passionately expressed her opposition to the trend of woke culture in a previous interview with Beat magazine, for Collins it was the effect on the parties she frequents that had particularly irked Collins.
“The parties I go to now are kind of dull,” she told the publication.
“They are red carpet things in which everybody does behave. If you don’t behave now you are going to get cancelled.”
Collins’ gripes are not only confined to the realms of cancel culture, she also previously voiced her less than favourable views of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Collins asked why “we need to give them any more oxygen?”
Back in 2021, in a chat with controversial TV personality, Piers Morgan, the actress was asked: “What do you make of what’s going on with the British royal family now with Meghan and Harry, the feud with William and Charles?”
“My lips are sealed on that subject,” Collins replied. “I just don’t want to go on national TV and say what I feel about Meghan and Harry because look what happened to you!”
With a career spanning over six decades, Collins has built a stellar legacy in the entertainment industry. She rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s, starring in a string of successful films, including The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing and The Stud. However, it was her iconic role as the glamorous and conniving Alexis Carrington in the hit television series Dynasty that catapulted her to global stardom.
Throughout her career, she has received numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Beyond her acting prowess, Collins is also an accomplished author, philanthropist, and advocate for various charitable causes.
