In an era where transparency reigns supreme, the British Royal Family is facing increasing pressure to lift the veil on their health concerns, as demands for greater openness about the well-being of its members surge across the globe.

As the shroud of secrecy continues to enfold King Charles’ undisclosed cancer diagnosis and Princess Catherine’s mysterious abdominal surgery, public discontent with the lack of transparency within the royal family is reaching its peak.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, renowned royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith expressed the widespread sentiment of unease among the public.

“Everybody feels unsettled by uncertainty, and there is too much uncertainty that is surrounding the monarchy right now,” Bedell Smith said.

Drawing parallels to the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Bedell Smith stressed the importance of visibility for King Charles.

“Queen Elizabeth used to say, ‘I need to be seen to be believed.’ It is important for Charles and his reign for the public to know a little bit more,” she added.

“The monarchy needs to be that anchor in times of trouble, and any sense of instability, which is inevitable when you have two of the key players out of action, is understandable.”

Despite King Charles’ acknowledgment of his cancer diagnosis, Bedell Smith noted that the lack of specific details has only fueled speculation about the severity of his illness.

“Even though he has revealed that he has a form of cancer, that has done nothing to quell the speculation about how seriously ill he may or may not be,” she explained.

“That is not doing the monarchy any favors. He is the head of state, and there are constitutional implications.”

In addition to speculation and concern mounting over King Charles’ health, rumours have run rampant regarding the well-being of Princess Catherine as she continues her recovery from abdominal surgery.

Limited information has been disclosed regarding Catherine’s health, as Kensington Palace has only released concise statements about her surgery and recovery.

Following her admission to the private London Clinic on Tuesday, January 16, updates have been sparse. The details surrounding her release from the hospital and her recent public appearance, the first since the surgery, remain the sole snippets of information shared with the public.

The shroud of secrecy has sent the rumour mill into overdrive with speculation rife regarding the Princess’ health, forcing the Palace to address rumours, stating, “We were very clear from the outset that the Princess of Wales was out until after Easter and Kensington Palace would only be providing updates when something was significant.”

The spokesperson reassured the public that Princess Catherine was “doing well”.
