Helen Mirren is fighting against ageist beauty standards by keeping her long hair despite its “radical” style for women over 60.

The 77-year-old revealed the reason she’d grown her hair out to begin with was that she “couldn’t be bothered” to cut it during lockdowns.

“You’re not supposed to have longer hair after a certain age,” Mirren said, speaking on the show Lorraine

“But during Covid, I started growing my hair and I hadn’t actually had long hair since I was in my 20s. And it sort of grew and grew and grew, and I couldn’t be bothered to cut it, basically.

“I thought, do you know what, it’s pretty cool, I think I’ll stick with it for a little while. It will come off eventually.

“But I’m kind of enjoying it, it’s quite radical.”

The Hundred-Foot Journey star said she wants to show women over 60 that they don’t have to conform to the stereotypes society wants to keep them in.

“Life doesn’t stop. And creativity doesn’t stop and passion doesn’t stop and energy doesn’t stop, unless you decide to stop it,” she said.

“So, it’s just be self-motivated, really, and never give up. And find enjoyment, if it’s possible in your life.”

Mirren debuted her gorgeously long locks at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival looking undeniably exquisite, stepping out onto the red carpet in a show-stopping, long-sleeved bedazzled silver gown paired with pointed black stilettos, subtle drop earrings, and of most note, an outstanding mane of platinum blonde hair.

Mirren is currently promoting her upcoming film Shazam! Fury of the Gods, where the actress revealed she broke her finger on set.

“I did some of my own stunts, but I broke my finger,” she revealed on Graham Norton Show.

“I was incredibly brave and didn’t say anything or complain because I wanted to be a real ‘stunty’ person.”

When asked about how she came to act in the film, Mirren said she couldn’t resist acting in a superhero movie.

“I wanted to do it because I loved the first Shazam. It was sweet and funny. I am not a big superhero type person, but I loved the idea of it and happily signed up for the second one. It is great,” the actress said.
