Yes, microwavable slippers are a thing, and we’ll take 5

No, it’s not too good to be true — Microwavable slippers do exist and they are expected to be a massive hit again this winter, after first stepping out in Oz mid last year.

According to our research, the winter wonders seem to have snuck onto the scene as early as 2018 in the ol’ US of A, but really rose to fame after Oprah Winfrey included the microwavable Intelex Plush Slippers in her list of favourite things for 2019.

Here in Australia, you can nab a pair for as little as $20 at Target, with the budget retailer marketing the snowy-white booties as having the ability to not only heat feet but also “relieve aches and pains when warm”.

What’s more, they are said to be able to provide relief from bruises and swelling by placing them inside a waterproof bag in the freezer for two hours and then applying the cold slippers to the affected area.

If heating, they should only be given no more than 45 seconds in a 500-750 watt microwave, or a maximum of 30 seconds in a 750-1000 watt microwave, as they are made from polyester and non-toxic silica beads. According to Target, users should be careful to follow the time limits carefully, as the temperature inside the slippers may continue to rise after removal from the microwave.

Once out of the microwave, it’s recommended the slippers be shaken to evenly distribute the heat and then temperature tested against the back of a hand. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the slippers are a bit of a fire hazard, and must not be left under clothes, as this could cause overheating.

Happily, Target isn’t the only retailer selling the toasty treats, which have already sold out in several locations around the country. Peter’s of Kensington is also selling pink and grey versions by Annabel Trends for $37 each. Differing from Target’s, these microwavable slippers have removable cotton heat packs (filled with tourmaline beads) that you heat (for one minute 30 seconds in a 500-700 watt microwave, or one minute in a 750-1000 watt microwave) and then insert back into the slippers.

Dick Smith is also selling the same two by Annabel Trends, as is Kogan. As they say, run – don’t walk! They are selling out in record time.
