Coles recalls family favourite ice creams over fears of metal fragments

Coles has been forced to recall some more of its most popular ice creams over fears they may contain metal fragments.

The supermarket giant first confirmed the recall of a batch of its own brand ‘Mini Classics’ ice creams two weeks ago, but now it has been expanded, as more ice creams are feared to have been contaminated.

The ice creams included in the original safety warning were a batch of both the vanilla and almond flavours, sold across Western Australia, the ACT, NSW and Queensland.

Now, a fresh batch of ‘Coles Mini Classics Vanilla Ice Cream 360mL’, carrying the best before date of April 17, 2020, have also been recalled.

They have been available for sale since Wednesday, May 16, in both Coles supermarkets and Coles Online in QLD and NSW. Customers are urged to return them to store immediately.

“The recall is due to the potential presence of metal fragments. Customers should not eat these products,” the retailer said in a statement. “Food products containing metal may cause injury if consumed.”

It added: “Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience. Customers seeking further information can contact Coles Customer Care on 1800 061 562.”

It comes just weeks after Ingham’s recalled one of its popular products from supermarkets across Australia because the food may contain “pieces of hard plastic”.

Australia and New Zealand’s biggest poultry producer said that 400 gram packages of its Chicken Sweet Chilli Tenders sold in Coles, Woolworths, SPAR and IGA stores were not suitable for consumption. The packages have use-by dates of 28/02/19 and 01/03/19.

It said it had notified all the supermarkets and the relevant food authorities in both countries about the issue and that consumers should take the chicken tenders back to the store they were purchased from for a full refund.
