It stole families’ hearts right across the globe in 1965 and now the magical world of Mary Poppins is being recreated once again with an all-star cast.

A brand new full-length trailer for the movie Mary Poppins Returns has finally been released, giving a first glimpse at lead actress Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins herself, as she meets a grown-up Michael and Jane, played by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer.

However, stealing the show is original actor Dick Van Dyke, 92, who returns to the new movie more than five decades after starring as Bert in the classic hit. He also played ageing banker Mr Dawes in the original, and he now fittingly takes on the role of the character’s son this time round.

The video shows the actor happily dancing on top of a table, in a scene strikingly similar to the original, while wearing his signature black suit and red flower.

Fans rushed to share their happiness at his brief appearance online, with one writing: “Dick Van Dyke is now fully Mr Dawes, I’m crying!” While another added: “He is back dancing on a desk even when he’s 92-years-old!”

The trailer begins with grown-up Michael and Jane as they slowly go through some of their old childhood belongings, including the iconic kite from the first film.

It soon flicks to Mary’s grand entrance as she slowly descends from the clouds with her umbrella over her head once again, before meeting Michael’s young children for the first time. As Michael and Jane comment on Mary’s ageless appearance, she gives a hint at that classic sassy attitude by telling them off for rudely commenting on her age at all.

The trailer appears to confirm that Michael’s wife has recently died, and he’s getting much-needed support from his sister during the difficult time – while the family appear to be struggling financially too and on the brink of losing their home.

Of course, Mary is there to save the day and the trailer follows her as she leads the whole family back into her magical animated world full of flowers, flying bikes, underwater swims and more.

They will join an all-star cast including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Julie Walters and Angela Lansbury in the new hit movie, but original Mary actress Julie Andrews will not appear this time round.

Blunt previously revealed in an interview with Variety magazine that she was asked to take on the iconic role before the script was even written – with Director Rob Marshall hand-picking her.

“Having somebody like Julie Andrews, who is iconic, play somebody like Mary Poppins, who is also iconic, it could have felt like I was rolling aside this huge boulder,” Blunt admitted of the pressure of following in Andrews’ footsteps.

“But Rob made it feel so intimate for me and empowering for me, so I could have my own version of her. I didn’t watch the original during the process. I had a memory of the movie seared into my brain from when I was a child, but I didn’t want the distraction of the amazing Julie’s version of her. I just read the books. This is my interpretation of Mary.”

The film will be released in Australia on New Year’s Day 2019.
