Eddie McGuire in hot water over joke about female reporter 28

View Profile

He’s no stranger to controversial comments and it looks like Eddie McGuire has gone and done it again.

The Collingwood Football Club president was hosting his radio show when he made a “joke” about drowning sports reporter Caroline Wilson with his colleagues.

According to McGuire though, it was all just for a laugh.

McGuire was chatting with North Melbourne club chair James Brayshaw, Wayne Carey and Danny Frawley, when he made the comment about drowning Caroline at a charity event called the Big Freeze at the ’G, an event where celebrities plunge into ice to raise money for MND.

This is how it went down.

McGuire: “In fact I reckon we should start the campaign for a one-person slide next year. Caroline Wilson. And I’ll put in 10 grand straight away – make it 20. [laughter] And if she stays under, 50. [louder laughter] What do you reckon guys? Who else is up there? I know you’re in JB?”

James Brayshaw: “No, yep, Straight in.”

Danny Frawley: “I’ll be in amongst it Ed.”

McGuire: “Is Duck there?”

Wayne Carey: “Yes, I’m here mate.”
[and later]

Frawley: “I’ll actually jump in and make sure she doesn’t — I’ll hold her under, Ed.”

McGuire: “I reckon we could charge 10,000 for everyone to stand around the outside and bomb her.”

Damien Barrett: “I’m on Caro’s side now, Ed. I’m on Caro’s side these days, Ed.” [indecipherable]

McGuire: “She’ll burn you like everyone else, mate. She’s like the black widow. She just sucks you in and gets you and you start talking to her and then bang! She gets you.”

And then McGuire ends: “It’ll be magnificent. I think we should do that next year. It’s all good for footy.”

The joke has left many people disgusted and has prompted calls for McGuire to be sacked from his radio gig and his position as Club President.

However, others are saying it is just the PC brigade making a fuss about nothing again and that McGuire was clearly joking.

What are your thoughts?

Was Eddie McGuire out of line with this joke? Or are we being too sensitive about it?

  1. Not even worth commenting on this garbage. As a suggestion, why don’t the PC, bleeding hearts go to the high court and push for a total ban on free speech, then if they’re successful, maybe they could attempt to get jokes made a criminal offense if it upsets them.

    • Well said… so over people not being able to joke, so over people being offended by things said about other people, and so over seeing it over and over again on daytime/nightime TV shows. So over people taking everything so personally, as if it was aimed at them. For goodness sake, I am sure this woman of whom they spoke, is quite capable of standing up for herself, defending herself, and giving it right back at them. It was a joke, but taken so personally by so many people. As a woman, I am very capable of brushing things off, even if they are said to me. Please don’t treat us like we are all fragile little beings who can’t defend ourselves, because we can, and we will, if we need to.

  2. get offhis back its about time we stood back and have a good laugh as there are no doubt plenty wishing to do the same with eddie

  3. Really? I have no time for that mcguire bloke. A mindless moron. All he is good for is reading questions to contestants on a quiz show and he isnt really good at that. but he didnt say anything worth noting in this rant than he does at any other time. Get over it. You dont like him do what I do. turn onto another chanel or read a book

  4. This is is just bloke talk. Something men so.. WOmen would like to probably like to castrate him. And his cronies.Just talking.

  5. I find it very worrying that the 3 people who have responded so far are all men and none seem to have a real problem with his comments. He would not have made such comments about another man. Because she is a woman operating in what he sees as a man’s field he thinks he can get away with comments like this. Women do not see these kinds of comments as a joke – they are definitely not funny – more of a statement that women should stick to being barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen and not operating in what men see as their exclusive fields. Attitudes like Eddie McGuire’s are behind much of the domestic violence in Australia.

    • I am a woman and I don’t have a problem with the comments either. Lighten up and see the joke in this. But just saying…….have you read some of the comments this female commentator makes?

      • I don’t see anything funny in his comments

    • If he worked for me I would fire him. So too should Collingwood.

    • “He would not have made such comments about another man”

Seriously? What planet do you live on?

Linking banter with domestic violence is absurd. Practically everyone would be an abuser.

As for Caro, she has used her position as a journalist plenty of times to make snide remarks about others. Caro is just as guilty of the bantering as McGuire and co but doesn’t get pulled up for it because those she directs her “banter” to generally shove it off and get on with life.

Caro is playing the victim card when she knows damn well she plays the bully also.

  6. This is the very reason we need the advertising campaigns about not letting little boys get away with treating girls with bullying and disrespect. The message goes both ways, little girls should not be expected to passively accept such treatment. This kind of aggression becomes so ingrained, men don’t even recognise when they have stepped way over the line. This conversation, in fact, could be in the school yard. It’s not a conversation that reasonable adults should have about another person, no matter what gender. Thank God this has been outed for the despicable behaviour it is! Time to grow up, Gentlemen and begin acting like gentle men! Would you like to have another man say this about your mother, daughter, wife, sister? Saying is “only about football” doesn’t give anyone the right to be so unprofessional. In fact, with footy being such a powerful influence, those associated with it should be even more wary of the messages they are sending to your younger generations. Let’s hope we catch these incidents more often and nip this kind of bullish behaviour in the bud. That way our children can grow up respecting each other.

  7. And the other two—Frawley and Brayshaw ?????????—Let them off?????

  8. Why don’t you all just get a life !!!

    • Good on ya Dawnie. I’m with you. Had it been said about a bloke, no-one would have said a damn thing.
The only people kicking up a fuss about this harmless bit of fun are the wowsers who have nothing better to do.

  9. Such a shame that people have forgotten how to laugh and share a joke anymore, too many precious folk out there now….

    • Well Said. All this PC nonsense is a minefield. Everybody biting their tongues and having to say the “right thing”.
The world would be a much better place if we could all just say it as it is. I used to love the Irish jokes because it was the Irish who would love telling them. That’s the trouble these days. Everybody has become so precious about everything. We should all relearn how to laugh at ourselves.

    • I so agree people are so precious these days heaven help us we cannot have a joke anymore

  10. Not really funny, shame about all the comments on here, but to be expected I guess.

  11. Here we go again…..have to agree…it was just a joke (joyce!) Is everyone getting too precious?
Let’s face it Caroline Wilson just loves the attention .. no matter if it is good or bad. And if it is bad she makes out she soooooo hurt ..what a load of B.S.
