We’re used to hearing about how us Baby Boomers are responsible for everything that’s wrong with the world today – or so some would have us believe.

But now the tables have turned.

There’s a video going viral on social media at the moment and it’s got a lot of us nodding our heads in agreement.

In the video, author Simon Sinek describes millennials (your grandkids generation – those born after the mid-1980s) as “entitled, narcissistic, self-interested, unfocused and lazy.”

And while you might agree with that, you might not agree with the reasons why he says they’re that way.

Sinek said many millennials grew up with “failed parenting strategies”.

Apparently, it’s not the fault of millennials that they’re this way.

“They were told that they were special, all the time. They were told they could have anything they want in life, just because they want it,” Sinek said.

“Some of them got into honours classes, not because they deserved it, but because their parents complained.

“Some of them got As, not because they earned them, because the teachers didn’t want to deal with the parents.

“Some kids got participation medals – they got a medal for coming in last.”

But it’s not just parenting Sinek points to.

As you might have imagined, technology is also a big factor.

Sinek said impatience and environment were also factors in the issues with millennials.

Watch the video above and tell us what you think. Do you think Simon Sinek is right about millennials?

Watched it a few days ago. He made a lot of sense.

    • SteveM

He really doesn’t. He’s a snake oil salesman going after sweet baby boomer money by trying to go after a popular target.

  2. Cynthia Power

Think that every time I see a cute little girl with a princess sign on her dress/tee shirt. Sending the wrong message.

Sorry, but I found this a very negative rant. Every generation has its challenges but I believe everyone will learn from their own experiences . But, sure, if Simon can motivate this generation to get off their computer or cell phone addiction or any other addiction – that would be great !

As a baby boomer I am a little over being told I am a burden on the taxpayer. Our generation started working earlier, worked longer than following generations without the financial support as our parents just didn’t have the money. We were to taught to work for what you wanted – earn it. We had no entitlements and yes we came last in competitions- but for many it just made us try harder. Yes teachers shy away from AEP (actively engaged parents) and Helicopter parents(who wouldn’t-some of these parents are scary) who just hover and destroy their child’s’ ability to pick themselves, dust themselves off and start all over again. There is a belief in entitlement in many young people-but there is still a large number of young people whose parents have allowed them to fall and get up on their own. I agree with everything he has said. Ban ‘little princess” outfits!!
