Liberal MP Tim Wilson proposed to his partner Ryan Bolger in an emotional speech in the House of Representatives on Monday morning.
Wilson asked Bolger to marry him shortly after the same-sex marriage bill was introduced to the Lower House.
Video footage shows Wilson fighting back tears as he asked the important question.
“In my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands,” Mr Wilson said, reports the ABC.
“They are the answer to the question we cannot ask.
“So there’s only one thing left to do; Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?”
Bolger’s face broke into a huge smile when he realised what Wilson was asking and answered with a resounding “yes!”.

While the House of Representatives is known to be a tense environment, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as applause rang out through the chamber.
The House of Reps will debate the same-sex marriage bill today after it passed in the Senate 43-12 last week.
