Sunday’s church service just got a little raunchier on the Gold Coast, where locals have been doing a double take thanks to a cheeky new sign out the front of the Surfer’s Paradise Anglican Church.

Like many churches, the Anglican institution has a large message board out the front of its building that’s usually used to display declarations about Jesus and positive atonements by way of forgiving people for their sins.

However, someone at the Gold Coast church must have a very naughty sense of humour because the latest message reads: “Forgiveness is swallowing when you’d rather spit.”

Queensland politician John-Paul Langbroek shared a snap of the message board on his Instagram page, joking that local parents would be getting some very awkward question from their kids asking “mummy, what does that mean?” in the coming days.

His photo quickly garnered plenty of comments with cheeky locals calling it “a sign from above raising more than eyebrows” and noting it gives “new meaning to ‘Sunday service'”.

While most filthy-minded folk can’t stop chuckling about sign, a spokesperson from the church told the Gold Coast Bulletin, the message was simply meant to encourage people to swallow their angry words, rather than yell at others in a moment of rage.

“If you want to say something, keep your mouth closed for a bit,” they told the paper.

“Swallow it, don’t spit it out.”

It’s not clear whether the double innuendo was lost on the church or whether they’re just having a little fun, but either way its certainly got more people talking about religion. Now if only they’d get down on their knees … to pray, that is.

Did the sign make you laugh? Is it good to see the church shaking off its serious side and making a joke? Do you still go to church on Sundays?
