Cher’s heritage gives her a 1973 hit

This 1973 hit was Cher’s second solo single, it hit the charts at number one in both August and October. The success of the song helped sell one million records world wide, awarding Cher with a Gold certificate for solo singer.

This song was inspired by Cher’s Cherokee mother and a white father. The lyrics describe a scenario where whites called her an “Indian squaw” and “white by law” as they never accepted her as a Cherokee.

Cher’s tour Do You Believe? was the first time she performed this hit song after 25 years from when it was release. In her 2002 tour Living Proof: The Farewell she sang it 326 times – once every show.
