Solo seniors: Finding joy, laughter, and adventure in your golden years

Sunshine in winter fills my eyes. I am glad the rain and clouds have vanished for a while. I can sit here with a happy brain, sipping my coffee, still a solo senior. That is nothing new, it is not the end of the world. Being a solo senior can be a quite normal part of ageing, as many greys are widowed or divorced.

That can happen to anyone at any age, there is no turning back in life. Solo seniors can choose their responses to situations or life status. Seniors, solo or not, are being cost-conscious because of rising costs, so if they want to meet anyone, it is online or locally, saving the cost of petrol driving to dates.

Our parents did raise us to manage, with good sound work ethics, while persisting to see things through till the end. Happy brains can keep up with ageing as well as we can. We can aim to choose wholesome foods, occasional treats, some moderate exercise, some pampering ourselves, and staying forever young at heart. We do have to accept the real-world limitations of ageing, and focus on choosing positives.

My personal positives for happy vibes revolve around my hobby of writing. I can focus on scribbling, like a pixie on a keyboard, cultivating a coffee breath, crafting words of ideas from some grey matter here behind my thick spectacles. Writers do find contentment in their individual writer’s café. We spend a lot of time needing a bomb to get us to go anywhere, but then we sometimes gaze at society and build stories, poetry, books or blogs. It is not any senior’s role these days to solve vast intellectual puzzles, or indeed, the big picture issues that are affecting our global or national society today. Our world contains eight billion champions, or wannabes, all can be regarded as mere tiny specks in the universe, Little People, dreaming big dreams.

Many seniors were pacifists once, we would hope to inspire our younger generations to design a peace and freedom project. That would be so great, to protect their world ahead for humanity. Ecumenical of course, for all their subsequent days on this planet. Someday, somehow, some when. Our roles as seniors, including solo boomers, is to hope we made a difference to the world we were passing through for all our years.

Noble objectives. But solo seniors like this scribe here can also have a good, long laugh at themselves, as we all need to destress, develop unserious thoughts. For example, this hapless housemaid has definitely got no valid intentions to become a female stripper. That would rock the buns of any age. I would not inflict that on the neighbourhood! No, it is no big thing, not exactly pining here for a handsome Casanova’s flings in my direction. “Some day your Prince will come…” Yeah, right, accept all our limitations as solo campers.

It is entirely up to the individual to choose their own adventures at our age, if solo seniors are hoping to age disgracefully. I shall wish all the best to lively, energetic, able-bodied boomer chicks and dudes aspiring for a ‘ring for Spring’. Yes, there are much more enthusiastic women in society, preferably rich.

Meanwhile, let’s all have a peace and freedom world, good message for today and globally, plant platonic friendship on our planet. When do we oldies want it? Start right now! I can write that love has many beautiful faces, like a peaceful home, calm and quiet days, a garden to grow, smiles from sisters and friends. We can all make smiles in words, even by saying, “Have a beautiful day.”

Dream big, solo seniors, or hitched greys, happy brains are so much fun.
