A brief history of Valentines Day… Will you be spreading the love?

Feb 14, 2014

February has always been the month of romance. Across the globe on every February 14, people get ‘loved up’ and spread love in their own ways. But, where does it come from and why do we celebrate this holiday?

Valentines Day

The centuries old tradition of St. Valentine’s Day originated from the mysterious Saint Valentine or the Feast (Pagan Festival) of Saint Valentine reflecting both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. Valentines Day is the commemoration of the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial, which apparently took place some time around A.D.270.

The Legend of St. Valentine, a patron Saint has always been of mystery. At the end of the 5th Century, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day, a day of romance, whereby this special day became associated with love.

Despite celebrating Valentine’s Day around the World, it is not a recognised public holiday and as usual, people are still expected to go to work.

Some people believe that the whole celebration is just an act of consumerism as retailers go into a “Valentine’s Day craze” forcing romance-related sales, but for some, receiving their romantic flowers, chocolates and jewellery is one of the best days of the year.

Some people also say say that Cupid is stupid, it’s not a modern tradition. Others, will use Cupid as an excuse to search for romance. Some romantic couples say that every day is Valentine’s Day to them, that their love fest lasts all year round.

This unusual celebration of love and romance is today, so how will you be spreading the love?

Do you celebrate Valentines Day? What will you be doing for your special someone?
