Iconic actor Sir Ian McKellen has revealed that he will be avoiding work for “the next few weeks” as he continues his recovery from neck and wrist injuries he sustained following a stage fall at a London Theatre.

While fans are no doubt disappointed that their favourite thespian would not be treading the boards for the time being, many were overjoyed that the 85-year-old was “on the mend”

Taking to social media, McKellen shared an update on his condition to fans, expressing his disappointment that he will have to miss his scheduled performances.

“Just two weeks after my accident onstage I want to assure my many well-wishers that the injuries (to wrist and neck) are on the mend,” he said.

“My doctors promise a complete recovery -but only if I avoid work over the next few weeks. Meanwhile the show goes on and the Player Kings company start their four weeks’ tour without me.

“Any actor will say that missing a performance feels somewhat shameful, even when he is not to blame. None of us ever wants to let down our audience.”

Many fans who had grown concerned following McKellen’s “nasty” fall welcomed the update as they wished The Lord of the Rings star all the best in his recovery.

McKellen’s accident occurred at the Noel Coward Theatre during a fight scene in the production of Player Kings, where the renowned actor lost his footing.

Following the fall, a spokesperson for the London theatre assured fans that McKellen “will make a speedy and full recovery” in a statement to the PA news agency

“Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of Player Kings,” the spokesperson said at the time.

“Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits.

“The production has made the decision to cancel the performance on Tuesday June 18 so Ian can rest. Those affected will be contacted by their point of purchase as soon as possible tomorrow.”

Reports indicate the actor cried out in pain as theatre staff quickly came to his aid. Audience member Paul Critchley described the fall as a “shock” to witness.
