Since stepping down from their royal duties in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s antics have incited calls for the pair to be stripped of their royal titles.
Whether it be expressing their grievances with the Royal Family in bombshell interviews or through Harry’s explosive memoir, the couple has made headlines with their actions, leading royal commentators and the public to demand that the pair lose their royal designations.
While it appears that there is no shortage of those who wish to see Harry and Meghan stripped of their titles, royal commentator Maureen Callahan recently told GBN America that it appears unlikely that the Royal Family would do so as it would give the couple “something else to gripe about”.
“They likely never will because they don’t want to give them something else to gripe about. Another quiver in their arsenal, as it were,” Callahan said.
“And you can see where they’re in this very difficult position of trying to abide and rise above, but also not sort of seem to co-sign these ridiculous cosplaying trips as royals or monetisations.”
While it doesn’t appear that The Firm will be taking away Harry and Meghan’s titles anytime soon, it doesn’t mean that members of the Royal Family aren’t growing tired of the pair’s behaviour, particularly their recent visit to Nigeria.
During a recent interview with The Mirror, royal author Tom Quinn explained that Harry and Meghan’s Nigeria visit “really upset the applecart” and that King Charles and Prince William are the most incensed.
“William is absolutely furious and determined to find a way to stop this happening in future. Charles is said to be angrier than anyone has ever seen him,” he told the publication.
“What’s really upset the applecart is the fact that the Nigerians treated Meghan and Harry as if they too thought this was an official tour – all the signs were there as the couple were greeted with dances, receptions, visits to schools and charities.”
In addition to their frustration, Charles and William have reportedly been left “scratching their heads” over how to manage such behaviour from Harry and Meghan moving forward.
“William and Charles are scratching their heads and thinking, ‘How are we going to control this nightmare situation?’,” Quinn said.
“Everything you might expect from an official royal visit was there – the receptions, the visits to schools and charities, to wounded soldiers and the disabled. Meghan and Harry’s speeches and their whole attitude has been designed to give the impression that they are still fully paid-up royals and William and his father King Charles don’t like it one bit.
“For Charles and William, it’s as if Meghan and Harry are saying, ‘We don’t need your permission to be working royals – we will do it on our own terms whenever and wherever we like’.”
While Harry and Meghan’s royal titles seem safe for now, one wonders if their recent antics might eventually force the Royal Family’s hand.
