Quite often as parents we can feel guilty about the things our children have done and blame ourselves.

Just ask Jacqui Lambie.

The Independent senator has made a frank admission about her son’s addiction during an emotional interview on the Today show, telling hosts Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic that “her conscience will never be clear”.

Senator Lambie said she blames herself for her son Dylan Milverton’s battle with ice addiction, pointing to the toll her struggle with Veterans Affairs after she was injured had on her family.

“He was my carer for a long time and there was a long time I spent down and out,” he said.

“That would’ve had an effect on him and I have to live with that.

“The best thing I can do is be there and continue to be there for him and hope he overcomes his addiction.”

The good news is her son has turned his life around, with the senator telling Lisa and Karl that he was just about to start a new job.

“Good on my son, he’s done a lovely job,” she said.

Senator Lambie’s honesty about her struggles as a parent and her son’s struggles with ice have earned her plenty of praise and respect over the years.

If you’ve ever had a child with an addiction, then chances are you’ll be able to relate to what Jacqui is feeling.
