Would you go, if someone gave you and three friends a ticket?
When you heard Virgin Galactic would run flights into space were you were a little curious about whether people really want to do this? Well, Land Rover Discovery Sport is going to find out in a hurry today. And I don’t know if I want to join in, in fact I don’t think it is for me. Is it for you?
The brand new Land Rover Discovery campaign has just launched in the UK tonight, coming together with Virgin Galactic to take you and three of your friends into the big dark unknown. Does it sound like something you’d be interested in?
“Galactic Discovery” is a global competition with an online film, released today, that features famous adventurers like Ranulph Fiennes and Bear Grylls considering what life is like when exploring unknown places.
The short film-bite brings Land Rover’s new compact SUV, and drives it around Virgin’s Spaceport in New Mexico, the place from which they will launch their flights.
The prize is a trip for you and three friends into space… yes SPACE! It is valued at $1 million. But to win, you might need to get your grandkids in on the action. (Not that I think all over 60s aren’t able).
You need to upload a film or photo that demonstrates your spirit of adventure and link it to the three people you want to take on the trip with you using Facebook.
The winners will be announced on the 2nd December 2014.
Now, for me this has me torn. My perception is that the risk of travelling into space is greater than the opportunity for excitement and being a safety-oriented person, I feel no desire to place my life at risk. But when I looked into it, it wasn’t as bad as I thought… only 536 people have travelled into space since we explored there, three people completed only a sub-orbital flight, 533 people reached Earth orbit, 24 traveled beyond low Earth orbit and 12 walked on the Moon.
And throughout that, until 2013, only eighteen astronauts have been killed on space missions, ten more have been killed in training accidents on the ground. So, really… with only 28 people lost to space, out of 536, the chances of getting home with a great story are better than I thought.
On that note, would you enter the Galactic Discovery competition?
If your answer is yes then choose your favourite three pals to join you on the space adventure and submit it via Land Rover’s website landrover.com/gotospace. Tag us – we want to know about it… we’ll even help you enter if you want a hand!
