Punk princess: Monaco’s Charlene debuts shock shaved hairdo

Princess Charlene of Monaco is certainly not one to shy away from a fashion-forward look, but her latest might just be her most daring yet.

During a royal appearance on Wednesday in Monaco, the 42-year-old, who’s married to Grace Kelly’s son Prince Albert, debuted a new hairstyle.

Instead of her usual bright blonde bob, the mother-of-two sported a half-shaved haircut that’s more often seen on punk rockers than it is on members of a royal family.

Charlene teamed her new cut with a sequinned face mask and donned a statement black-and-gold patterned jacket and a sparkly black turtleneck for the event, which saw her hand out Christmas gifts to children in wealthy French Riviera city.

Like her late mother-in-law Princess Grace, Charlene joined the royal family as an outsider having no royal connections of her own prior to meeting Prince Albert. Charlene met Albert at a swimming competition in 2000 — the same year she represented South Africa in the pool at the Sydney Olympics. The pair married in 2011 at the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.

The princess is now a doting mum to son Prince Jacques and his twin sister Princess Gabriella, who turned six last week. To mark the occasion, Charlene uploaded a series of sweet photos of the twins blowing out the candles on their birthday cake.

“Happy 6th birthday my beautiful children,” she captioned the post.

The royal outing comes months after Prince Albert tested positive for coronavirus. The diagnosis was announced in a statement from the palace back in March with officials confirming Albert was in “good health” and was undergoing treatment in hospital.

“The prince is being monitored by his doctor and treated by the specialists at the Princess Grace Hospital,” the statement read. “Prince Albert continues to work from his private apartment and is in close contact with the members of his cabinet, government and closest collaborators.

“His Serene Highness urged the people of Monaco to respect the measures of confinement and to limit contact with others to a minimum. Only the strict observance of these confinement measures will make it possible to stop the spread of the coronavirus.”
