Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary has shown off her competitive side after competing in a riveting “royal race” against her husband Crown Prince Frederik at the Rockwool Denmark Sailing GrandPrix.

The Aussie-born mother of four was geared up and ready to take on the waters dressed in head-to-toe black, sporting a Team Australia rashguard and matching cap as she joined captain Tom Slingsby and the rest of his team on board the Australia F50.

Mary was totally at home on the water as she got behind the F50’s wheel and maneuvered her team to victory, beating her husband and team Denmark on the chilly waters of Oresund in Copenhagen.

“Crown Prince Frederik and I have sailed together and he is a good mate of mine and I knew he really wanted the win,” Slingsby said.

“But with Princess Mary on board who was born in Australia, we just knew we had to perform and show that the Aussies can’t be beaten in a race and we did just that.

“I started the race and then as soon as we were off I handed the wheel over to Crown Princess Mary. She was steering the F50 at over 80kms an hour and did an amazing job, getting us to the finish 0.5 of a second ahead of the Danish team.”

Many royal watchers and Australians were also quick to shower Mary with congratulatory messages on social media.

“I Think Denmark is blessed with the most wonderful Royal Danish couples of All times,” one said.

“How wonderful! Thanks for sharing. I’m a little bit proud that our Australian Danish Crown Princess Mary was on the winning Australian boat.”

“That’s our girl!!! Aussie aussie aussie.”

“You can take the girl out of Australia, but you’ll never take the Australia out of the girl. You go Mares,” commented another.

The Danish royal couple is known to share a love for sailing and this isn’t the first time they have competed in a friendly sailing competition against one another.

Back in 2005, Mary and Frederik competed in a series of 20-minute yacht races on Sydney Harbour with Mary emerging as the victor, beating her husband 2-1.

According to 9News, the couple has also passed along their love for sailing to their children Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent.
