Wildlife warrior Robert Irwin has opened up about the bittersweet challenge of celebrating life’s milestones without his late father, Steve Irwin, expressing his hope of making him proud.

Robert recently marked his 21st birthday on December 1 by sharing pictures on social media of the late Crocodile Hunter at the same age, vowing to continue honouring his father’s legacy as he embarks on the next “chapter” of life.

“Today I turn 21,” he began.

“I was looking through the archives a few days ago and I found these pictures of my dad on his 21st. It can be hard to celebrate the milestones when there’s someone missing, but I will carry his memory and passion with me in this new chapter of life.

“I am one lucky guy to be surrounded by my amazing family today. Time to celebrate!”

Fans flooded Robert’s post with heartfelt birthday wishes, expressing admiration for his dedication to his father’s legacy.

“Happy Birthday Robert! Your father is a LEGEND! He’d be as proud of you as we all are. Keep walking in his footsteps,” one wrote.

“Happy 21st Birthday Robert! These pictures are so bittersweet! Thank you for sharing these with us all.”

“He is always with you and I know he is beyond proud of you and your amazing family!”

“Happy Birthday Robert. I was at the Zoo for your first birthday! Your dad was a legend. You’re doing him proud,” commented another.

“Your dad was an amazing man and so are YOU.”

In a recent interview with Stellar magazine, Robert spoke further about how “heartbreaking” birthdays can be without his dad around.

“It can be heartbreaking. I can’t beat around the bush. It’s really hard, particularly when it’s those milestones,” he told the publication.

While such events can be difficult, Robert is grateful to have the support of his mum Terri and sister Bindi.

“It’s difficult navigating that without a father figure. But I have to really praise my entire family, and particularly my mum, on the way in which she’s stepped up, to make sure that – while there will always be part of myself missing and I’ll never be complete – I never felt like I missed out on anything,” he said.

“I hope that somewhere, somehow, he knows I’m trying to make him [his dad] proud.”
