It’s common knowledge that the bond between Prince Harry and Prince William has been significantly strained for quite a while but now one royal expert has claimed the divide is “as wide as ever”, something that would have left Princess Diana “devastated”.

The insights into the brother’s strained relationship come after William mentioned his younger brother in a recent documentary, Prince William: We Can End Homelessness. During the documentary, William reflected on visiting a homeless shelter alongside his mother and Harry when they were children.

While some considered this to be a possible olive branch from William, royal author and journalist Phil Dampier doesn’t believe William’s comment means the frosty relations between the brothers will end anytime soon.

“It’s been seen by some as an olive branch to Harry because he’s mentioned him for the first time in six years in this documentary,” he told The Sun.

“I don’t see it that myself. I think the rift between them is still as wide as ever, unfortunately.

“It’s just a rather sad indication of the fact that something which they could have worked together on, and something which they both experienced at a young age, they’re no longer doing.

“It’s just left William on his own, and Harry’s not joining in, so I don’t see this as an olive branch.”

In addition to Dampier’s sombre assessment of William and Harry’s relationship, he shared his thoughts on how their late mother, Princess Diana, would have felt about her sons’ feud.

“I’m sure Diana would be obviously devastated to see what’s happened between the two brothers,” he said.

“She’d obviously be very upset to see that they’ve drifted apart so much and have fallen out so badly.

“I mean, obviously, if she’d still been alive, you’d like to think that that wouldn’t have happened in the first place.”

Dampier’s insights follow other royal experts who have outlined the challenges of any possible reconciliation between William and Harry.

Most recently, royal author and expert Tom Quinn suggested that several deep-seated issues complicate the prospect of reconciliation between the brothers.

“The feud between Harry and William isn’t just down to the fact that their wives don’t get on. It also has a lot to do with their dysfunctional, strife-torn childhoods and Harry’s obsession with being an also-ran,” he told the US Mirror.

According to Quinn, Charles and Diana’s separation and divorce also play a role in the siblings’ division.

“As children, they spent one weekend with their mother Diana going to McDonald’s and wearing baseball caps, and the following weekend with their father shooting pheasants and wearing tweed trousers,” Quinn explained.

“Their parents were split, their lives were split, and being split is all they know. Harry has also always resented the fact that his mother Diana relied almost too much on William for advice and comfort – Harry felt left out even back then.”
