Popular ice cream recalled after safety risk

Australian families have loved Streets’ ice cream for years but unfortunately a safety recall could mean that they are taken out and returned for a refund.

According to SMH, Unilever has recalled its 1.25L and 2L tubs of Blue Ribbon ice-cream, warning they may contain pieces of plastic that pose a safety risk.

The ice-cream manufacturer said it was aware of a very small number of customers who had found plastic pieces in their tubs.

All Blue Ribbon flavours in the 1.25L and 2L tubs sold throughout retail stores across Australia.

The unfortunate incident occurred after machinery in Unilever’s Minto factory distributed pieces of plastic into the containers.

“This is an operational issue whereby plastic appears to have entered some tubs during the production process,” a Unilever spokeswoman said.

“We have undertaken a full investigation of the issue and reviewed our quality assurance measures. We have implemented a number of measures to address the issue and are confident the steps we have taken have rectified the problem.”

If you have a Blue Ribbon product with best before dates between April 27, 2018 and April 28, 2017, you can return for a refund.

“Consumers are advised not to eat the affected products and should return empty ice-cream tubs to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the statement read.

If you have a product with a best before date from April 28, 2018 onwards, it will not be affected.

Consumers with questions can contact Unilever on 1800 801 885 or email [email protected].

“We thank everyone for their co-operation and apologise for the inconvenience caused by this recall. The health and safety of our consumers and maintaining our high quality standards,” Unilever said.
