Legendary comedians to star on new Australia Post stamps

Australia Post is to feature four Australian comedians on new postage stamps as part of the company’s annual Legends Awards. Leading comedians Magda Szubanski, Garry McDonald, Adam Hills and Noeline Brown will be featured on the stamps.

Nicole Sheffield, Australia Post’s executive general manager of community and consumer said the leading comedians had been recognised for their comedic skills and their contribution to the community more broadly.

“This year’s beloved recipients have entertained and delighted us for decades, not only with their side-splitting performances but also through the characters and programs they have created,” Sheffield said.

“I recall many of the shows with such fondness and, given the current climate, plan to introduce them to my children soon so I can enjoy a good laugh again.

“These performers hold a very special place in the hearts of many Australians, and we’re excited to celebrate their achievements with this new stamp release.”

First up is Garry McDonald, 71, who is best known for his role as Arthur Beare in Mother and Son, and the repeating role of Norman Gunston. In 2003, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his work in the area of mental illness.

Noeline Brown, 81, is well-known for her roles in The Mavis Bramston Show, My Name’s McGooley, What’s Yours?, not to mention The Naked Vicar Show and Blankety Blanks with Graham Kennedy.

Magda Szubanski’s Kath & Kim character Sharon Strzelecki is a hugely recognisable face here in Australia. The English-born Australian actress, 51, has also acted in films such as Babe, Happy Feet, and The Golden Compass.

Adam Hills, 49, is one of Australia’s best-known comedians. Throughout his career, he’s hosted the popular music quiz show Spicks and Specks on the ABC, and the talk show Adam Hills Tonight.

The Australia Post Legends Award celebrates living Australians who have made a unique contribution to the nation through their field of endeavour, inspiring the community, and influencing the way Australians think about themselves.

Past recipients include Nicole Kidman, Sir Donald Bradman, Dame Joan Sutherland, Barry Humphries, Sir Gustav Nossal, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, Cate Blanchett, Stephanie Alexander, Rod Laver and Bert Newton.
