Paul McCartney has lifted the curtain on his complicated friendship with fellow Beatles’ bandmate John Lennon, revealing the nature of their final conversation.

The rock and roll legends discussed the mundane process of baking bread the last time they spoke, McCartney revealed in a recent interview on The Howard Stern Show.

McCartney told Stern the conversation was “very special” in spite of the “whole horrible thing of the group breaking up”.

“And I ring John and I was making bread and got quite good at it,” he said.

“So when I heard John was doing it, it was great. We could just talk about something so ordinary.

“There’s no threat or anything. It was just two guys talking about, ‘Well, I don’t know. Do you leave it overnight or what do you do? And someone says, ‘Yeah, I leave it overnight in a hot cupboard’ and you’d just be chatting.

“It was really nice and I was so glad that we got back to that relationship that we’d always had when we were kids. We’d lived in each other’s pockets for so long that it was great to get back to that.”

McCartney’s clear fondness for his last conversation with his former bandmate stands in stark contrast to earlier comments where he blamed Lennon for the band’s breakup.

In excerpts from an interview published by The Guardian, McCartney called the band’s split the “most difficult period of my life” and addressed the breakup when questioned about his decision to pursue a solo career.

“I didn’t instigate the split. That was our Johnny,” he said.

“Stop right there. I am not the person who instigated the split. Oh no, no, no. John walked into a room one day and said I am leaving the Beatles. Is that instigating the split, or not?”

Earlier this year McCartney showed there was no bad blood between the pair as he paid a touching tribute to his late bandmate on what would have been his 81st birthday.

In a black and white photo shared to his Instagram, the two music icons are seen holding guitars to their chins like violins.

Paul captioned the image, “Happy Birthday thoughts for John – Paul.”
