Scones are some of the tastiest afternoon tea bites for the whole family to fawn over but what about those days when you’re not in the mood for anything too sweet? These delicious savoury options offer a delicious twist to the classic snack.

With just an easy handful of ingredients, these crunchy, cheesy treats will make everyone reach back for seconds. Top it off with some butter and a tasty spread of your choice and you’re good to go!

  • 300g (2 cups) self-raising flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 50g butter, at room temperature, chopped
  • 25g (1/3 cup) finely grated parmesan
  • 2 tablespoons pine nuts
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary
  • 250ml (1 cup) buttermilk
  • Buttermilk, extra, to brush

  1. Preheat oven to 220C. Grease baking tray. Combine flour and salt in bowl. Rub in butter with fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in parmesan, pine nuts and rosemary.
  2. Make well in mixture. Mix in buttermilk. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth. Shape dough into a 2cm-thick square. Cut into 12 squares.
  3. Place scones side by side on tray. Brush with buttermilk. Bake for 16-18 minutes or until golden and scones sound hollow when tapped on top. Serve.
