Today host Karl Stefanovic has shared the touching moment his mother Jenny finally met her beautiful granddaughter, baby Harper, after months apart due to the coronavirus pandemic. Karl’s mum lives in Cairns, while the television presenter resides in New South Wales with his wife Jasmine and their little bundle of joy.
In the sweet picture, Jenny can be seen cradling the five-month-old on her lap as she plays with a purple flower.
“My mum lives in Cairns,” he wrote. “Covid stopped her from seeing our baby Harper. She was scared to come down initially. She didn’t want to get it. She didn’t want to fly. But last week she drove 2500 kilometres to be with us. She’s had enough.”
Karl continued: “A fierce beautiful magnificent independent vulnerable spiritual woman. Here she is presenting her grand daughter with my grand mother’s favourite flower. She is my mum. I love her. @jennypenny_49.”
Fans were quick to comment on the picture, with one writing: “I love seeing your mum with her beautiful little granddaughter Harper, yes I agree Karl you’re mum is a very strong person and I just love how you feel about her so beautiful to share this with us all.”
Another added: “I am so pleased your ma got down and she is having that precious time with her granddaughter, and with you, jas and the family. Sending love!”
While a third wrote: “Immediate bond. So special. I know @jennypenny_49 will make the most of every precious moment.”
Before Harper’s arrival, Karl previously spoke about being separated from his mother, revealing his devastation over the fact his much-loved mother won’t get to meet his new baby daughter. At the time, the presenter became emotional when discussing the interstate travel restrictions and hospital protocols and said Jenny feels “so isolated” in Queensland.
“My mum lives in Cairns,” he explained on the Today show. “She’s just turned 70. She feels so isolated … she can’t travel interstate.”
Karl’s co-host Allison Langdon then added: “She’s got lots of new grandbabies, well almost”. To which Karl replied: “The reality is, she’s not going to be able to meet them because hospitals aren’t going to allow anyone else into the birthing rooms and that.”
