After three decades in London’s West End, Australian theatre-goers can finally see one of its longest running plays.

If live theatre holds a special place in your heart, you may have already heard glowing things about The Woman in Black. Adapted from the 1983 novel by English writer Susan Hill, the stage version is the West End’s second longest-running play — and it’s now thrilling Australian audiences as it tours the mainland between May and August 2024.

The unmissable local production stars two of our most iconic screen and stage performers: the revered John Waters (Doctor Doctor, Offspring, Rake) and Daniel MacPherson (Land of Bad, Foundation, Neighbours). As the only two actors on stage, the pair use their combined talents to populate an entire world of memorable characters.

Waters (referred to as ‘theatre royalty’ by producer Alex Woodward) stars as lawyer Arthur Kipps, who hires an actor (MacPherson) to help him retell an unforgettable tale: the time he was sent to a remote English village to settle the deceased estate of a troubled woman.

With the actor portraying a young Kipps, and Kipps himself narrating the piece and playing all supporting characters, a chilling narrative emerges.

During Kipps’ stay, the dead woman’s vengeful ghost haunts the village, with Kipps terrorised by ghostly visitations and unimaginable horrors. As frightening events unfold, he becomes obsessed with the grim belief that he and his family have been horrifically cursed by the ghostly apparition of a woman in black.

Through the power of words and performance — bolstered by stunning production values — audiences are transported to north England’s dark and eerie marshes. Kipps’ recounted experience of the dead woman’s dangerous hauntings will send ice-cold shivers through every seat in the house.

Reviewers of this West End classic highlight the fear-factor, exciting fans of the supernatural thriller genre who love a good fright.
