It’s been a few weeks since Malcolm Turnbull embarrassed himself in front of the entire country by butchering the lyrics to John Farnham’s ‘You’re The Voice’, but now he’ had a chance to redeem himself.
Speaking with Clairsy, Matt and Kymba on Triple M in Perth this morning, Turnbull confessed that although he doesn’t know the words to Farnsy’s song, he’s a massive fan of Aussie singer Olivia Newton-John, and does at least know the words to some of her biggest hits.
“You were playing Olivia Newton-John before,” Turnbull said on the show, before asking the hosts, “What’s your favourite Olivia Newton-John song?”
When one of the hosts admitted, “I wouldn’t even know an Olivia Newton-John song … other than ‘Let’s Get Physical’,” Turnbull jumped in to reveal his favourite tune by the hitmaker is ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ from the movie Grease.
Still trying to prove he does in fact know some Farnham hits, Turnbull called ‘Pressure Down’ “one of the great classics” and admitted he’s embarrassed by his on-screen blunder at the Commonwealth Games.
He was teased by one of the hosts: “I have an apology to make Mr. Prime Minister, because a couple of weeks ago I did tweet when you appeared amongst our wonderful swim team to struggle with the words to ‘You’re The Voice’, so I went to JB Hi-Fi last night – I’ve got you a gold limited edition copy of John Farnham’s album.”
“Ok, excellent that’s great – thank you,” Turnbull replied, no doubt eagerly anticipating jamming the CD into his government car on the way back to the office.
When asked if he’d be interested in joining in on a Friday-sing-along with the hosts, Turnbull replied: “Well you know, I don’t actually sing very often. There’s a reason for that”.
Since he’s openly confessed his fondness for Newton-John, he’ll no doubt be sitting down to watch the upcoming Channel 7 biopic Olivia: Hopelessly Devoted To You about the star’s life and rise to fame. While the PM might be tucking in on the couch with a bowl of popcorn to watch the drama unfold, Newton-John certainly won’t be. She’s already admitted she was left feeling “horrified” when she first heard about it.
The actress, 69, will be played by her good friend Delta Goodrem in the biopic, and while she insisted the pair are close – she said she had no desire to watch the singer’s portrayal of her on screen. In fact, she was against the TV special ever being made from the start, as she was worried about how it would affect her loved ones. However, she eventually realised it was a losing battle.
Speaking to Australia’s Women’s Weekly, she said: “I probably won’t watch it. When they told me they were doing it, I was horrified.”
