Gregg Hurwitz delivers another cracking thriller

Apr 13, 2017

The Nowhere Man by Gregg Hurwitz is the keenly-awaited sequel to Orphan X.

I haven’t read the first, but this second book in the Orphan X (Evan Smoak) series is a standalone contribution to the thriller genre and, as such, I found it well paced and entertaining.

Evan was rescued from a grim children’s home as part of a secret Government initiative and trained to be an expert assassin. After some time he decides to break away from this secret organisation and use his formidable skills to help those unable to protect themselves.

His new life is rudely interrupted when he is suddenly attacked, captured, drugged and deposited in an unknown location.

Heavily guarded in luxurious accommodation and completely cut off from everything he knows, he soon begins to plan his escape, only to discover his jailor seems to be one step ahead of him. However, after several failed attempts to escape, his captors begin to realise that they are in fact trapped with one of the most resourceful and dangerous men on the planet.

The ingenious and creative ideas that Evan comes up with in planning his escape and his jailor’s imaginative ideas to stop him had me intrigued. I let my imagination go with the flow and was able to enjoy this escapist plot.

Orphan X was a phenomenal success and spent 4 consecutive weeks in the Sunday Times Top 10 list. I can see no reason why The Nowhere Man will not also enjoy the same success.  Movie rights have been snapped up by Warner Bros, which is set to star Bradley Cooper.

Gregg Hurwitz researches his thrillers by sneaking onto demolition ranges with Navy SEALs, studying martial arts and going undercover into mind-control cults. He takes his research seriously!

A graduate of Harvard and Oxford universities, he also writes for the screen, TV, Wolverine and Batman. The devotees of Lee Child and Vince Flynn should enjoy this read.
