Bert and Patti Newton have battled their own health issues in recent years, but it was even more worrying for the loving pair when their little granddaughter was the one with the illness.

Patti posted on her Instagram account on Saturday night that granddaughter Lola had been hospitalised with pneumonia and breathing problems. But the veteran showbiz personality and grandmother was quick to see the bright side, adding that the experience was “very scary, in for a couple of days” but that the six-year-old was receiving “fantastic care” at the “wonderful” Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital and so they were feeling “very lucky”.

On Sunday, Patti followed up with a snap of Lola looking much brighter after a visit from her famous ‘Poppy’, with Bert beaming as he leans in close to his granddaughter.

Fans were quick to send well-wishes to Lola and her family, with only Instagram user called suzieq11 even noting how lovely it had been to meet the couple that same day, and famous friend Rhonda Burchmore commenting that “this pic makes me so very happy” of the cheerier Lola with her grandfather.

Lola is the daughter of Bert and Patti’s daughter Lauren Newton and her husband Matt Welsh. The couple have four children: Sam, Eva, Lola and Monty, with Patti frequently pictured enjoying the kids’ company as a very happy nana. Toddler Monty has a remarkable resemblance to his grandfather Burt, with even Patti referring to them as “my two Moonfaces”.

Bert and Patti have spoken in the past about happy grandparenting makes them, with TV legend Bert reportedly saying that “there is that old saying, the wonderful thing about being a grandfather, or grandparent, is that you give the kids back, but in the case of Patti and myself, we don’t want to!”.

Patti certainly hasn’t turned her back on the TV cameras, however, also posting a reminder to fans on Sunday of her upcoming appearance on SBS’s Who Do You Think You Are? at 7.30pm on Tuesday. “Hope you enjoy, it was a great experience for me,” she said of making the program that reportedly uncovered plenty of secrets about her ancestors.
