Aspiring designer Crystal Kimber has taken the crown at the Oaks Day Fashion in the Fields, stunning the judges with a blue floral dress made out of her late grandmother’s vintage skirt.
After entering more than 45 Fashions on the Field competitions across Australia, Kimber was crowned the winner of the Myer event at the Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday.
The winning dress was inspired by Kimber’s late grandmother who first discovered the skirt in a vintage store 40 years ago. It appears fashion runs in the family with Kimber’s mother, Gail Taylor, reworking the embroidered skirt into the gorgeous new design for her daughter.
Adding a splash of pink, Kimber paired the vintage sleeveless dress with a stunning pink headpiece to match her clutch and floral hoop earrings. She kept her makeup and hair relatively simple and swept her golden locks into a sophisticated bun.
Taylor told Channel 7 that her daughter had always adored her grandmother’s skirt and loved to play with her vintage clothes.
When her grandmother died a few years ago, the floral skirt was left to Kimber.
Now the beloved skirt has won her a variety of prizes valued over $100,000, including a brand new Lexus and a $22,000 Girard-Perregaux Laureato watch.
“It is a very special dress, her nana would just be shining down on her tonight,” Taylor told Channel 7.
Taylor has been with Kimber every step of the way, and has helped her with most of her dresses through the years.
Soon after winning the final, Kimber took to Instagram to thank her mum.
