Let’s chat! 50 years on from The Beatles Australian tour…

Young Beatles

“I was 15 when I went to my first Beatles concert. I had to sneak out and stay with a girlfriend because there was absolutely no way my mother and father would have allowed me to go, on a school night.

“My girlfriend, Cheryl, was a total Beatles maniac – Beatles haircut, Beatles-style clothes and at least two rooms of her walls covered in Beatles posters.

“The concert was at Sydney Stadium, at Rushcutters Bay, where only nights before there had been boxing in the ring!

“I could not see the sense of attending the concert. Everyone screamed their heads off and I don’t remember anything being sung. Whilst I loved it, it made me a bit mad.

“In contrast, I never went to a Rolling Stones Concert. The Stones were just a little bit wicked for us,”

This is Karen’s memory of seeing the Beatles on their one and only Australian tour.

50 years on, we’re celebrating the anniversary of this incredible tour. Tonight, When the Beatles Drove Us Wild a documentary from Adelaide-based ABC producer Lincoln Tyner will air on ABC1 at 8:30pm.

So, to commemorate the anniversary as the generation who loved them most, we want you to share your memories of seeing the Beatles here…
