Tony Abbott’s letter on International Women’s Day

Mar 08, 2014

On International Women’s Day Tony Abbott has forwarded around a letter honouring the contributions made to women across our country.

He explains that although there have been great strides forward the gender pay gap has widened over recent years and his office will be focusing on policies to help women make choices that combine work and family.

This includes committing to a paid parental leave scheme that will be paid at an actual workers wage. Here is is the letter:

What do you think about this letter and his commitment to paid parental leave to pay a women’s full wage up to $75,000 for 6 months?

Do you support it? Or do you think that this money could be better spent elsewhere?

For me, as a women in my 30s who is considering children I even consider this amount a little too excessive. It seems there are many other pressing causes and issues to support rather than middle class welfare…

Perhaps money could be better focused on the increasing burden of childcare costs as I know that this is an incredible issue for families. Also, what about providing more training and support to keep many over 60s men and women in the workforce this is another big issue that is often overlooked?
