Labor MP Anthony Albanese announced some sad news on Monday, as he revealed he has separated from his wife after more than 30 years together.
The 55-year-old Shadow Minister for Transport and Infrastructure confirmed the break-up in a statement, in which he said he was “deeply saddened” that his relationship with Carmel, who he married in 2000, has come to an end.
“I am deeply saddened that my relationship of over 30 years with Carmel Tebbutt has ended in separation,” Albanese said in a statement.
“There are no third parties involved. I would ask that our privacy be respected at this time.”
Albanese and Carmel have 18-year-old son Nathan together, with the Labor pollie confirming the former couple will share parenting responsibilities in the wake of their break-up.
The member for Grayndler added: “We will continue to share parenting responsibilities of our 18-year-old son Nathan, who has successfully completed his HSC and has developed into an outstanding young man who we are both proud of.”
He recently revealed to Starts at 60 that he would be spending the Christmas holidays with his wife and son in Port Macquarie, along with Carmel’s parents, one of her brothers and the family dog, Toto.
Albo even opened up about a cheeky Christmas tradition that leaves his family red-faced every single year. He said: “Much to my family’s embarrassment I always dress the car up in the reindeer nose and antlers!”
Albanese and Tebbutt were once dubbed the “power couple” of the Australian Labor Party, with Carmel also boasting an impressive career in politics. In 1998 she was elected to State parliament in New South Wales, quickly rising to the role of Minister for Juvenile Justice.
She resigned from state parliament in 2005 however to successfully contest the seat of Marrickville at a by-election. Tebbutt held onto this seat until 2015 when she announced she would not be contesting her seat at the upcoming election and would be resigning from politics.
Tebbutt also served as NSW deputy premier and deputy leader of the NSW Labor Party under both Nathan Rees and Kristina Keneally.
