Outrage at Daniel Morcombe’s killer’s latest privilege

The man who killed Daniel Morcombe has been granted special permission to use a different name in prison.

Just weeks after he was left permanently disfigured after being attacked with boiling water, Brett Peter Cowan is reportedly being called a new name.

You might be wondering how it got this?

Well, it all started back in 2013 when Cowan legally changed his name to Shaddo N-unyah Hunter.

Apparently he told detectives Shaddo was his dog’s name.

What about N-unyah?

That apparently stands for “none of your business”, so Newscorp is reporting.

It makes you wonder what law allows this?

A Queensland Corrective Services spokesman told AAP that prisoners like Cowan, who are born in another state, are entitled to be addressed as their new identity.

If you’re feeling outraged about this, you’re not the only one.

The move has been widely criticised, with a prison source telling the Courier Mail that they “can’t believe the department agreed to change it”.

“It (the name change) could be to take pressure off him,” the source reportedly said.

Last week it was reported that Cowan had a price on his head in jail, which would explain why earlier this year he was placed in a protective cell and why he was attacked when he was moved into a general unit of the prison.

Cowan will spend the rest of his life behind bars, serving a life sentence for the abduction and murder of Daniel in 2003.
