What is the world coming to when a grandmother can’t even go shopping without the risk of being mugged by heartless strangers? In what is becoming a sickening trend in Australia and other countries around the world, older members of the community are being targeted by thieves and scammers.

In a clip that is going viral online, an 86-year-old British woman suffered a heart attack after her purse was stolen while she was shopping at a post office in the Leicestershire area in the United Kingdom. In the clip shared by the Daily Mirror, the lady can be seen shopping when a man and a woman approach her.

The female thief, who is wearing a large shawl, creeps up behind the unsuspecting gran, before reaching inside her handbag. She has a feel around and grabs the purse. She then returns to the safety of her male accomplice and the pair make their swift exit from the store.

According to information shared with the video, the elderly lady informed staff as soon as she was aware what happened, but suffered a heart attack shortly after the incident. She was taken to hospital and was discharged a week later after treatment. Police released footage of the sickening robbery and thankfully, someone has identified the two thieves.

In a statement released by Leicestershire Police, two people were arrested after the incident at Castle Donington.

“Yesterday (Tuesday 25 September) a man and woman, both aged 36 and from the Birmingham area, were arrested on suspicion of theft,” Police said. “The arrests relate to an incident in a post office in Borough Street around 10am on 1 September when a purse was stolen from the victim’s handbag.”

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the two suspects have been released pending further investigations. Police also confirmed that although the lady suffered a heart attack and was hospitalised, she is now recovering at home.

It’s not just Boomers in public that are being targeted. Earlier this year, a 62-year-old Australian man was left bruised and bloody after a violent home invasion. He awoke at 3am to discover two young intruders. When he confronted them, they proceeded to attack him with a shovel.

As three robbers stormed the bookmakers in the man’s hometown of County Cork, the great-grandfather bravely confronted the men and saved the office manager.

Do you think enough is being done to keep the elderly safe on the streets? What should happen to those found guilty of such crimes?
