Some funny, embarrassing and awkward stories from our travels…

We’ve travelled extensively over the years and with great travel comes great stories. Some of our stories are grand and adventurous but others are just plain cringe-worthy and funny. Here are three of our favourite humorous tales from our great adventures…

Don’t Lose The Crown Jewels

In 2012 we were in Quito, Ecuador, getting ready to head to the airport for our flight to Lima, Peru. We packed our suitcases, emptied the room safe that contained our valuables, did a final inspection of the room, and then took the taxi to the airport.

While in the boarding lounge, Adele checked our passports, boarding passes and other documentation. Then she asked me, “You’ve got the jewellery pouch right?”

“Which jewellery pouch?” I replied. “The burgundy-coloured one in the safe,” she stated. Her raised voice was attracting the attention of nearby passengers. It now hit me what had occurred. The pouch was burgundy and the bottom of the safe was in a burgundy-coloured material. Somehow, I had managed to miss the pouch.

Frantically, I got on my phone, called the hotel and asked them to search for the pouch. After a five minute wait, the receptionist came back to tell me that someone in housekeeping had found it and turned it in to reception. Thank goodness for honesty, otherwise my life would have been in jeopardy.

Rabbits

About 20 years ago we went to visit friends who were living in Melbourne at the time. We enjoyed our time, chatting, seeing some of the sights, shopping and doing some of the things amorous couples do. One particular afternoon we had some down time, so we did what comes naturally. Later we met our friends upstairs and a comment was made, “I didn’t realise we had rabbits staying with us”. We asked our friend what she meant.

Apparently, a girl in the house next door saw us in action through our window, called her mother over and both of them observed what was going on. The mother came over and subtlety told our friend that perhaps her guests should fully draw the blinds!

A Tour With A Difference

Ten years ago we were on a holiday in New Zealand. On this particular day we were in the city of Rotorua. We were fortunate to have a spacious hotel room with a separate bedroom and lounge. It was the afternoon and we had come back from visiting some of the sites, so we decided to get amorous in the lounge.

Now, I am not making this up. Suddenly, while we were at it full throttle, the door opens and in walks a Chinese tour group (apparently they were touring the hotel). We were exposed there in our full glory and the looks on their faces was one of what you might say, surprise. The tour leader who had a badge and clip board, nodded as if apologising and led her group out the door. Stunned and embarrassed, we hurriedly locked the door – we had failed to lock it. It must have been a memorable part of the tour for that group.
