Where you can find Australia’s best sausage roll revealed

Sausage rolls, with their savoury filling and flaky pastry, hold a cherished place in the hearts and stomachs of Australians and now the best sausage roll in the country has been revealed after a bakery in South Australia took out the top honour.

Banana Boogie Bakery was awarded the honour at this year’s Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) South Australian Baking Show, where 49 bakeries and 247 delicious products competed for the coveted title.

The team at Banana Boogie Bakery couldn’t contain their excitement following the win, taking to social media to celebrate their victory and share the “amazing” news with their customers.

“What an amazing achievement by the Banana Boogie bakers on the weekend,” they wrote.

“Along with taking out best sausage roll in Australia for the second year in a row they also took out some amazing categories at the state baking competition.”

As news of their victory spread, sausage roll fanatics across the country offered their congratulations to the bakery.

“Woooo the best xxx congrats guys,” one wrote.

“This pleases me very much. A clear vision. Years of Hard work. Commitment. Love it.”

“Well done guys Woohoo,” commented another.

“Congratulations.”

Ingredients

  • 600g standard beef sausages
  • ½ red onion, diced very finely
  • 2 tsp chopped fresh thyme, optional
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 5 sheets ready rolled puff pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten with a dash of water
  • ¼ cup plain flour

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Remove the outer skin from the sausages and throw them away.
  3. Mix together the finely chopped onion, sausage meat, thyme and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Fill a small bowl with water and place it next to a large chopping board.
  5. Place one sheet of puff pastry on the chopping board.
  6. Take around 75g of the meat mixture in your hand and roll it lightly your flour.
  7. Roll it into an even log and place it on top of the puff pastry; make sure it is just a couple of centimetres away from the edge of the pastry.
  8. Run some water around the edge of pastry with your finger and then begin to fold the pastry over the top of the meat; making sure you press the join down
  9. One it is tight, cut away the other half of the sheet and press along all the joins with the fork.
  10. Cut the log into 5 equal portions and jab two air holes on top with a knife.
  11. Place onto the baking tray and repeat with the rest of the sausage mixture.
  12. Once finished lightly brush the sausage rolls with egg.
  13. Place them in the oven and cook them for around 20 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  14. Stand for 5 minutes before serving.
