They may be part of the British monarchy but Prince William and wife Catherine aren’t exempt from some laws of the land – and that includes registering the birth of their new baby.

But what a birth certificate it is! Where parents enter their occupation, the entries of on the birth record of Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge are pretty impressive. William’s occupation is listed as ‘Prince of the United Kingdom’, while Catherine’s is ‘Princess of the United Kingdom’.

There is one significant difference between little Louis’ birth certificate and those of his siblings George and Charlotte, however. The older royal children’s certificates were handwritten, while Louis’ is neatly typed. British media reported that that is because the poor registrar who hand-wrote Prince George’s birth record actually received death threats over her messy writing!

Registrar Alison Cathcart said at the time that she got flustered with Prince William sitting next to her as she scrawled down the details. In an interview with the Daily Mail in 2014, she remembered that “one person said their cat had better handwriting, someone called for me to be fired and someone even said I was illiterate”.

“Let’s just say I had to have more than one attempt. What can I say? It was a very hot day and I was flustered and trying to fill this thing in with Prince William sitting beside me,” she recalled. Not to be deterred though, Cathcart also registered Princess Charlotte’s birth, again by hand.

Some royal fans questioned why Catherine’s occupation was listed as ‘princess’ when she went by the title Duchess of Cambridge. But The Express explains that although the commoner officially became Princess William of Wales when she married Prince William, Catherine doesn’t actually have the right to use ‘princess’ as part of her name, since that can only be done by people who are royal by birth.

“When Prince Charles ascends the throne and Prince William officially becomes HRH Prince of Wales, Kate too will be entitled to become HRH Princess of Wales,” the newspaper said. “It’s unlikely she will choose this title, however, given its close links to William and Prince Harry’s late mother, Diana, Princess Of Wales.”

Do you remember registering your children’s births? What was your occupation listed as at the time?
