In a groundbreaking initiative, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) has unveiled a cutting-edge online app set to revolutionise the lives of the approximately 250,000 Australian men grappling with the challenges of prostate cancer.

The Survivorship Toolkit, meticulously crafted by the PCFA, is poised to dispel the confusion surrounding the disease and its treatments, providing a comprehensive resource for men and their families.

PCFA’s Chief Executive, Anne Savage, expressed optimism about the potential impact of the Survivorship Toolkit, emphasising its potential to save lives.

“Men often feel isolated when they are diagnosed with the disease,” Savage said.

“Until now, the information has been hard to find in one place. Our Survivorship toolkit will change that, becoming the first in Australia to be the single source of expert information to help men navigate their diagnosis and treatment.”

Prostate cancer, the most common cancer in Australia, affects 1 in 5 men. The Survivorship Toolkit is heralded as a transformative support system, distinguishing fact from fiction and addressing the individual needs of those impacted, from diagnosis to post-treatment life.

“From testing to diagnosis, what the different stages and the treatment options are, as well as mental health and wellbeing support, including for men with advanced stages of the disease, providing men with access to vital information and resources,” Savage explained.

“We know that awareness levels of prostate cancer in Australia are low, which often makes diagnosis and treatment that much harder.

“The Survivorship Toolkit puts complex concepts into easy-to-understand terms, making it easier for men and their families to make decisions about their diagnosis and treatment.”

Beyond the initial treatment phase, the Toolkit extends its support by addressing lifelong side effects, debunking myths, and offering guidance on health and fitness practices conducive to recovery.

Savage highlighted the importance of continued specialised care post-treatment, acknowledging the Toolkit as a key resource in dispelling misconceptions about living with prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer treatment can result in lifelong side-effects, which means we must support patients and offer specialised care well beyond their initial treatment,” she said.

“Our Toolkit helps to debunk myths and misconceptions about living with prostate cancer, providing guidance on health and fitness practices that aid in recovery.”

“This new Toolkit is one more weapon in our armoury to defeat prostate cancer,” Savage stated.
