In a candid interview, Hollywood icon Goldie Hawn has finally addressed the burning question that has intrigued fans and media alike for decades: Why she and Kurt Russell chose not to tie the knot despite their 40-year love story?

After they first met on the set of the 1968 Disney musical The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, the pair have bucked the trend of traditional Hollywood relationships that fizzle out all too quickly under the intense glare of the celebrity spotlight, remaining committed to one another.

Despite being one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples and sparking marriage rumours in 1989, the pair has never taken the plunge.

During an interview on CNN’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? the Overboard star opened up about her and Russell’s decision to forgo marriage.

“Why should we get married? Isn’t that a better question?” she began.

“Because we have been married and because when it doesn’t work out it ends up to be a big business. Somebody has to own something. It’s always ugly,” said Hawn, who has been married twice before.

“Somebody has to actually take a look and say, ‘How many divorces are fun? How many divorces actually don’t cost money? How many divorces make you even hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?'”

While reflecting on the dynamics of her relationship, Hawn stressed the importance of maintaining independence while in a relationship.

“I like the idea that I can wake up in the morning and make decisions every day if I want to be here,” she said.

“Ultimately, staying independent with independent thinking is important. So you can hold on to yourself and you’re going to actually have that feeling.”

In a clear display of how close their bond is, the couple recently attended their granddaughter’s birthday party wearing matching outfits, seemingly ripped straight from a fairy tale.

Taking to Instagram, Hawn and Russell showed they were ready to make their granddaughter Rani Rose’s dreams come true when they donned costumes influenced by Disney’s iconic Cinderella.

Hawn and her granddaughter both wore the princess’ recognisable blue and white, sparkling ballgown while Russell, 72, dressed as the dashing Prince Charming.

“Happy 4th birthday our precious Rani Rose. You are the real queen! I’ll take Lady in waiting everyday as long as the prince is always beside me! WE LOVE YOU!!!” Hawn captioned her post.
