Not many believe they’ll win big. But what happens when they do?

It’s a favourite topic of conversation at every Aussie barbecue.

‘What would you do if you won a prize home? Would you keep working? Tell everyone? Tell no one? Live in it? Sell it? Travel? Party? Invest?’ It’s fun to think about and interesting to consider what we might do with unexpected millions, but few of us believe it will happen to us. Until it does.

The winners of RSL Art Unions are regular, hard-working Australians who were simply going about their lives when they received ‘the call’. They had bought Art Union tickets because they like to support veterans and had thought maybe there’s a chance of winning the Great Australian Dream.

Statistics tell us that Australians overwhelmingly believe home ownership is the key to security and wealth, but sadly, that it’s becoming increasingly unattainable. YouGov recently revealed that almost one in five Aussies believe the current economic climate means saving the deposit for a home is impossible, and that younger people are almost twice as likely to feel they will never own their own home. For them, that the ‘Great Australian Dream,’ seems permanently beyond their reach, no matter how hard they work.

Certainly, their parents and grandparents worked hard, but the increase in property prices and the comparatively slow growth in wages and savings means the majority of younger Australians are facing a future without the security of owning their own homes, let alone investment or holiday property.

In that environment, it’s little wonder the dream of winning a prize home is so enticing. Particularly RSL Art Union, which offers magnificent properties in stunning locations, while supporting veterans and families.

And real people win them. Liam was a tradie in his thirties who won a $12.5M apartment complex on the Gold Coast in 2022. Eager to live his best life, Liam quit his job and now he’s ‘living the dream,’ in a way he’d never imagined was possible, especially at his age.

Then there was the middle-aged couple who won a luxury apartment and a quarter of a million dollars in gold bullion. They are still living simply but with a more relaxed mindset, knowing they can help set their young adult children up for life. They’re enjoying the freedom to exhale, to pay a years’ worth of bills at once, to plan a holiday that’s a bit indulgent, to upgrade the car before the old one packs it in. As lifelong battlers, their prize offers time and space they’ve not had before.

Then there’s Dorothy, who at age 84, won a $3.5M Gold Coast apartment including over $750,000 in gold. The idea of winning was overwhelming, and initially Dorothy didn’t believe it, but the prize has become an enormous source of joy and security. The Coolangatta apartment has become a hub for family holidays, while the gold has allowed Dorothy to set up savings accounts for her children and grandchildren. ‘That gives me great pleasure,’ she said, ‘It’s such a relief to know they have money if they need it. Everyone wants to do that … but not everybody can.’

As Australians, we’re all different, but in many ways we’re the same. We dream of being free to spend our time doing things we enjoy with people we love. For most of us, that means owning property – and over the past few years, Queensland property has become especially appealing. YouGov tells us more than fifteen percent of Australians are considering a move to the sunshine state within the next two to five years, and the Gold Coast (where most of the RSL prize homes are located) is top of the list for forty percent of would-be movers.

Winning an RSL Art Union prize home in Queensland has been a reality for hundreds of people, as it will be for many more. No one who received ‘that call’ ever imagined that one day, it would be them. As Dorothy said, ‘Real people win these prizes. It can actually happen.’

RSL Art Union was created in a spirit of mateship, from a deep commitment to supporting those who served and sacrificed for the way of life we all treasure. Although every winner will choose to enjoy their prize differently, each one is living the Great Australian Dream.
