Old-fashioned apple crumble

Who doesn’t love an apple crumble? They are the perfect combination of sweet and crunchy, thanks to that delicious apple filling and crumb topping. A favourite dessert on cooler evenings, just add some vanilla custard or ice-cream and enjoy!

Serves 8


2.2kg apples
Grated zest of 1 orange
Grated zest of 1 lemon
2 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup raw sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg

1.5 cups plain flour
3/4 cup raw sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup oats
225g cold unsalted butter, diced


  1. Preheat oven to 180C. Butter a 23cm x 36cm x  2cm baking dish.
  2. Peel, core and cut apples into large wedges.
  3. Combine apples with both zests, both juices, sugar and both spices. Pour into the dish.
  4. To make the topping, in a separate dish combine flour, both sugars, salt, oats and cold butter. Mix on a low speed until mixture is crumbly and butter is the size of peas. Scatter evenly over apples.
  5. Place dish on a sheet pan and back for 1 hour until top is brown and apples are bubbly.
