Five-ingredient cheesy savoury scones

Nov 20, 2018
There's nothing like a delicious savoury snack!

While we usually think of scones as a lovely sweet treat to enjoy with a cuppa, this recipe for easy, cheesy savoury scones is delicious enough to get even the most traditional scone eater on side! Like all good scone recipes, this version is easy to make and produces perfect fluffy scones every time. Brushing the tops with milk before baking will help them turn out golden and crispy on top, so they look just as good as they taste. Rather than jam and cream, serve these up with a slathering of butter and any other savoury toppings you desire. Dig in!

Ingredients

  • 225g self raising flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 55g butter
  • 25g mature Cheddar, grated
  • 150ml milk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 220C. Lightly grease a baking tray. Add flour and salt to a large bowl and mix together. Rub in butter using fingertips until resembles breadcrumbs.
Add cheese, stir well. Add milk and stir until mixture forms a soft dough.
  2. Turn onto a lightly floured work surface and knead very lightly. Pat dough out into to a 2cm thick disc. Use a 5cm cutter to cut rounds and place on baking tray. Separate slightly so there is room to expand. Continue with rest of dough, lightly kneading in between cutting.
  3. Brush tops with some milk. Bake for 12–15 minutes until well risen and golden. Cool on a wire rack. Serve.
