Enjoy life and live longer, it’s that simple

We are led to believe that being happy is better for our health, but is that really true? It turns out that yes it is, as a study from the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care at University College, London, published findings proving that there is a crucial link, especially later in life.

The biggest finding was that happier people, who enjoy life, lead more active and healthier lifestyles and this leads to increased mobility and decreased health risks as we age.

The study analysed over 3,000 men and women, aged 55 and above, over eight years. Of the happiest 20% only 4% ever reported the development of physical problems. The instance was quadrupled in the lowest 20%, where 17% reported developing physical problems over the eight years.

Another interesting observation was that the 20% least happy people also had a significant decline in their every day walking speed. It also proved that older people who are happy and enjoying life are more likely to live up to a decade longer than those who weren’t.

The factors that contributed to happiness and enjoyment deterrents were debt, poor financial situations, family isolation, the loss of friends and the lack of participation in community or group based hobbies and interest groups. So, what boxes do you tick?

It is important that as we get older, we spend time with loved ones, friends and family to keep you engaged and connected. It is also wonderful for brain health and memory function to have a range of interests and hobbies, such as creative writing, reading or craft. Keeping physically fit isn’t as stressful to the body as most think, simple yoga, pilates, swimming or walking have fantastic benefits for joint, bone and muscular health that will help you to get the most out of every day.

What we have always thought has now been proven, so how are you going to live your life to the fullest and enjoy it more?
